Since the collapse of the health care system, hospitals, insurers and other providers have returned to the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. But, despite all the changes since then they remain the same.
Federal actuaries’ latest data shows that 18.3% of the U.S. GDP was consumed by healthcare in 2021. That was up from 17.6% in 2019, reinforcing billionaire Warren Buffett’s characterization of the health care system as a “tapeworm.” Of the $4.2 trillion Americans spent on health care in 2021, almost 60% went toward hospitals, outpatient centers, and doctors — nearly identical to prior years.
