Achieving a better future for all by encouraging healthcare interoperability

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has set the foundation for a connected healthcare system where providers, patients, and payers can exchange information. This was possible partly because of the Interoperability, Patient Access Final Rule. CMS has new policies in place to improve health outcomes and provide better access to information for all parties.

CMS has also identified a new data exchange standard – Health Level 7 (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) Release 4.0.1. – to enable the exchange of patient information throughout the healthcare system with optimal flexibility and minimal friction using application programming interface (API) platforms. 

The FHIR standard is exciting because it not only gives states and healthcare organisations the guidelines they need to comply with the CMS rules and requirements, but also creates the opportunity to deliver truly connected, optimized and patient-centered healthcare. The rule is…
