Doctors, public health specialists, and even Democratic members are raising alarm about a Biden administration proposal to limit access to a critical addiction-treatment medication.
The proposal would limit telehealth access to buprenorphine. This is a widely used and effective drug to treat opioid dependence disorder. Telemedicine visits are currently allowed to give buprenorphine refills or new prescriptions. But the new rule will require a physical examination of telehealth patients who wish to remain on the medication for more time than 30 days.
