
Maryland is poised to become the first state in the nation to pass a law that will invest in alternative methods of medical research.
The legislature passed this bill earlier in the month. It does not ban the use of monkeys and dogs for research but it requires universities and companies to contribute to the fund. This fund would be used by a state agency to award grants for other forms of research like cell-based assays and organs on a chip.
