It’s no Red Wedding, but one coupling’s nuptials rang alarms for House of the Dragon fans when they noted its absence entirely from the show.
Now, the Game of Thrones spinoff treads a lot of groundwork, which means some scenes simply get lost in the cut. Viewers may have noticed this happened in between episode 2 and episode 3 as the show dropped us right in front of the newly crowned Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey). It raised quizzical brows, considering the second episode of the HBO Max drama left off with Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) discovering Alicent’s pending marriage to King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) — what a plot twist.
So, what exactly happened? One fan filled in the blanks after discovering two deleted scenes and posted it on Instagram. The stitched photos revealed a confrontation ensued after Rhaenyra learns her dear friend would marry her father. Meanwhile another image showed Rhaenyra later lacing up Alicent’s regal wedding gown.
Looks like the images somehow caught the attention of the House of the Dragon director Greg Yaitanes as he shared the fan account’s post on his Instagram Stories. He confirmed the missing scene, writing, “Two scenes that unfortunately didn’t make it into the final cut, the aftermath fight between @millyalcock and @theemilycarey — both were quite powerful.”
Greg also addressed the image of Rhaenyra helping Alicent prepare for her wedding. The director revealed on Instagram that the scene was intended as a call back to the first episode, “The Heirs of the Dragon.”
“This scene mirrored the scene in episode 1 where @theemilycarey was dressing @millyalcock — now reversed with heartache,” he added.
Though Alicent may be missing some major screen time, her real-life counterpart is making up for it behind the scenes. Actress Emily Carey recently shared an Instagram carousel of photos that documented her time filming. One picture revealed her in full hair and makeup as she showed off her faux baby bump. She captioned the images, “episode 3! 🔥🐉🐉👶🏼👶🏼🤰🏻🤰🏻🐉👶🏼🔥🔥 #uptheduff.”
House of the Dragon fans reacted to the post with laughs and sounded off their thoughts in the comments section. “What an episode,” one follower quipped. “The last one! Iconic! You are outstanding! X,” another said about the actress balancing a drink on her padded stomach. “I’m not ready to say goodbye to young Alicent 😢,” a different person replied.
As Emily’s time on the throne expires, actress Olivia Cooke inherits the crown as the older Alicent. No doubt, she’ll do her justice!
